Nine ways to awaken your spirit to God

Let us begin with a guide to developing your spiritual senses so you can experience more of God’s presence.

The Kingdom of God is within your reach and is accessed through faith. Faith believes in the supernatural reality of God’s kingdom and that Jesus has given us access to it.

When your spirit is awakened to God, you can see, sense and perceive the invisible kingdom and discern what God is doing in and around you.

The Bible teaches that sleeping believers are like dead people. Spiritual sleepiness causes our senses to be dull and our hearts to be numb to the thoughts and concerns of God. The revelation light that proceeds from God, through Christ, brings power, life, and truth to your being.

Ephesians 5:14 – “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Revelation 3:2. – “Wake up and strengthen all that remains before it dies…”

Spiritual sleepiness can derive from apathy or be put on you by an oppressive spirit. One of satans strategies is to hinder the saints from experiencing intimacy with God. If you sense you are battling a slumbering spirit, let us go after it together right now.

 Prayer

“Jesus, I desire to be awakened to your love and fully alive in Christ. I thank you and declare your word in Luke 10:19 – “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.” I now take authority over slumbering and oppressive spirits and command them to release me! I send all unclean spirits to the feet of King Jesus, and I declare the promise of Isaiah 40:31, “Those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” I release my spirit to soar in the heights with the Lord, and I seal this prayer in the precious blood of Jesus. Amen and Amen!

 

Awakening Your Senses

You are a triune (3-part) being, made in the image of God. You are a spirit with a soul that lives in a body. You have three sets of five senses. Yes, you have 15 senses! Each part of you can taste, touch, hear, see and smell.

I’ll explain using an illustration of a rose –

Body

Your body is your physical structure. It connects to the physical world with your five physical senses.

Suppose I asked a group of people to smell a rose. Everyone would engage with the fragrance of the rose using their physical sense of smell. Some might have a physical reaction, such as sneezing or itchy eyes. These are physical reactions from interacting with the rose in the physical realm.

Soul

Your soul is made up of your mind, will, and emotions. Your soul thinks, feels, and wants. Your soul senses interact with the interpersonal realm.

If I asked those same people to smell the rose with their soul senses, they would have different experiences depending on the memories each one associated with the scent.
For example, varied reactions in the interpersonal realm might include reminiscing about a wedding, a funeral, or Grandma’s perfume.

 

Spirit

Your spirit has been described as that knowing place, your conscience, intuition, or sensitivity to God. It’s the deepest part and purest part of you.  Your spirit is that miraculous and magnificent part of you that God fashioned by hand and placed in your mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:13 – For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are your works; my soul knows it very well.

“Your spirit interacts with the spiritual realm. The spiritual scent in the unseen realm is just as real as the natural realm, the difference being that you might smell a spiritual aroma while the person next to you cannot.

I had a spiritual experience during worship when a fragrance from heaven materialized and then completely disappeared with no trace at all. I knew it was a spiritual fragrance from the spiritual realm because it happened repeatedly.

The people near me were unaware of the heavenly scent until it was brought to their attention.

I asked several people around me, “Can you smell the anointing of God?” Four people could smell the spiritual sent. We pressed into the coconut, pineapple, and spice essence released into the atmosphere. It awakened our spirits and deepened our faith in the unseen reality of the Kingdom of God.

This experience drew us deeper into worship and adoration of God.

This happened again the following Sunday. This time I was on the other side of the room, worshipping next to an older woman, when the scent appeared. I told her of heaven’s scent being released and prayed for her to be able to smell it too, but she could not. Finally, she said, in the sweetest little voice, “It’s okay; I’m just blessed that you do!” And the moment she said, “you DO,” the scent appeared to her, and she declared with joy, “I do, I do! I smell it now!” She then started worshipping with all of her heart!

This phenomenon of a heavenly scent happened twice and has not happened since – or perhaps it has, but my spirit wasn’t paying attention! Because of our propensity to be spiritually asleep, we must intentionally look at things through a spiritual lens. It’s as simple as asking the Lord to stir us up and awaken our spirits so that we can be aware of what is happening in the spiritual realm.

The spiritual sense of smell brings awareness to God’s presence and can even warn us when evil is near. I have heard reports of the scent of sulfur when the demonic is present, though I have not experienced that myself.

 

Additional examples of Spiritual Senses:

During our “soaking in God’s presence” ministry events, a lady reported tasting strawberries while worshiping in the soaking room.
I have not tasted spiritual food, but once during worship, I experienced the taste of fresh rain. As I sang praises to God, a heavenly mist fell upon my tongue. It was subtle and delicate, and I surely would have missed it had I not been spiritually aware. The key is paying attention – I can’t say this enough!

 

I know of 3 testimonies, one mine, of people who felt water on their skin during one of our soaking events. Soaking is the powerful practice of simply laying down in a posture of rest to connect with God and experience His presence.

You can do this with Christian instrumental music or guided Christian meditation. Just BE SURE of the purity of the artist you are partnering with in the spirit! You wouldn’t want to open yourself up to New-age or occult roots. For soaking, I recommend Kimberly and Alberto Rivera because she sings in the spirit so powerfully. Graham Cooke is wonderful for devotional style soaking and encouragement, and of course, theirs me, シ for guided Christian meditations in the heavenly realm.

I have felt the large, peace-filled hand of the Lord upon me many times. Many people have reported that during our soaking event, they felt a hand upon them, and when they looked to see who was praying for them, they realized that no one was there.

Many people experience heat when the Lord is healing or ministering to them. One time, I met a lady collecting carts in front of Ralphs grocery store. I noticed she had a back brace and injury, so I asked her to pray for her. When I laid my hand on her back and began to pray, her back got hot, and it scared her. She ran away from me during my prayer! Lol. She returned a few minutes later, telling me that it freaked her out, but her back had healed!

Hear

The audible voice of God is rare, but it does happen. One early morning, while dreaming that I was walking in the garden with the Lord, I was awakened by the audible voice of God when He called out my first name. “Candi.” My eyes flew open from a deep sleep, but no one was there.
I had always imagined God’s voice sounding like a roar, an echo, or mighty waters, but surprisingly, He spoke my name in an ordinary man’s voice – a voice like a Dad.

He confirmed that it was His voice the following day when I went to a living tabernacle event. I picked up the brochure, and on the back was the story of how she got the call to build the tabernacle. The words read, “I had an encounter with God where I was walking in the garden with the Lord, and he spoke my name.” When I read those words, I started weeping. Yes! He spoke my name! One of the many beautiful things about God is that He will always confirm His word.

See

Sometimes, during a prayer session, the Lord will lead me to awaken someone’s sleepy spirit. Multiple times I have been blessed to see (in the spirit) the slumbering human spirit. The visual I have seen in a sleeping spirit is huge eyes positioned over the stomach. The dull eyes are sealed shut with sleep matter. It looks as if their eyes have been closed for 100 years.

As I prayed, I saw the eyes slowly open as if from a long, deep sleep. It was amazing to watch the eyes of one’s spirit become fully open and awakened to God. The large, round eyes had long sweeping lashes and held innocence, awe, and enlightenment expressions. The eyes looked around in wonder as the newly awakened human spirit began to connect to the Holy Spirit in a new and more profound way. This photo was the closest thing I could find depicting the eyes of the spirit, and yet it does not compare to the deep purity I saw in the eyes of the human spirit. Our spirits are without sin! That is why it is so important to pray that God would enlarge your spirit so that your spirit can lead you in all righteousness and holiness.

Awakening happens when Jesus shines His light in the heart of man. When a person receives Christ, everything becomes new, colorful, and alive! But far too often, Christians slip back into spiritual apathy and slumber. When this happens, a fresh encounter with God is needed to refresh their hearts so they can connect intimately with Him. This kind of encounter can happen through abandoned worship, prayer with meditation, spiritual renewal, or a fresh baptism in the spirit.

Our soul often rules us; What we think, feel, and want. We can pray to God to evoke and enlarge our spirits, so we can know and long for what God thinks, feels, and desires.
My prayer is for your eyes to be full of light and for your spirit to be awakened to God so that you might connect intimately with Him using all of your 15 senses. Ask God to show you more about how to awaken your spirit to God.

Ephesians 1: 17-19
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know Him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know the hope He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe.

God wants you to be fully engaged and connected to Him.
Fully alive,
Full of light,
Full of wisdom, and
Fully awakened to Christ.
And He will shine his glory upon you!

We were created to shine and reflect God’s light. We are not a reflection of this world but a representation of the Kingdom of heaven. Jesus glowed and emanated peace and love. I imagine everyone saw it. Have you ever witnessed the glory of the Lord on a person’s face? I have, and it is a beautiful thing to see! Once, I saw the glory of God come upon an older lady during worship at a church. There was a youthful radiance about her, and the glory of God appeared to have washed off every wrinkle and replaced it with glowing light. I pray that as you re-present the Lord, your countenance will reflect the glory of God.

Nine ways to awaken your spirit to God

1. Rebuke deaf, dumb and blind spirits.
2. Daily, ask God to enlarge your spirit.
3. Be intentional about seeing life through your spiritual eyes. Ask God to help you become aware, see, and discern the world around you. Look for God in everything. – street signs, license plates, song lyrics, Older Disney movies – (Pinnochio is one of my favorite examples of this! It will amaze you! – read the movie script here). There is no limit on what God will use to give you a personal message. We limit God when we fail to pay attention.

4. Passionately seek and fully connect with God in spirit, soul, and body.
5. Rest, meditate and be still before the Lord. (Find Holy Spirit-led meditations here)
6. Worship Him with your entire being.
7. Read God’s word with your spiritual eyes open.                                                                                                                                                                                                          8. Look, listen, and pay attention to the Holy Spirit.
9. Practice listening-prayer; Ask God a connection question, then listen until He answers. Connection questions connect your heart to God’s heart. Here are some examples of connection questions that God loves to answer! Jesus, what do you love about me? Jesus, how do you want me to love (person) today? Father God, what do you want me to know?

Everything that sparkles isn’t gold! – So test every word that you think might be from God. Test it by asking yourself: Does it bring encouragement… comfort…identity?  Is it consistent with the character of God as described in the Bible?  Is it consistent with the Scriptures? Does it reassure me that God knows my heart, concerns, and hopes? Does it express God’s love for me?

Biblical examples of spiritual senses:

• Daniel heard the voice of the Lord and fell trembling to the floor when he felt a hand touch him.
• Ezekiel had spiritual encounters where he saw heavenly visions and ate a scroll that tasted like honey.
• David told us to taste and see the goodness of God.
• Hebrews talks about being enlightened and tasting a heavenly gift.
• In Exodus, God told Moses that His Presence would go with him.
• In Romans, Paul told of a man caught up to the third heaven and didn’t know whether it was in the body or out of the body.
• Paul describes us as the sweet aroma of Christ.
• Adam and Eve heard the sound of God walking in the garden, and Adam heard God call out his name.
• 1 Corinthians says we who have the Holy Spirit can discern spiritual things.
• In Exodus, God spoke to his people out of a cloud.
• In Deuteronomy, God spoke from the midst of a fire.

These are great examples of men using their spiritual senses to encounter God, but let’s not limit God to a book! Jesus did much more than what was recorded. John 21:25 – If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
